My children want to have a vegetable garden. We do not have a yard just a porch. Has anyone had luck with vegetables that grow in a pot?

I haven't been very successful at growing vegetables in pots, but herbs work great. If you plant aromatics like mints and lemon balm, they can make tea, which is fun, and chives, oregano, basil, and rosemary are strong enough to make cooking fun for kids - add the herbs to potatoes and sandwhiches, things they oridnarily wouldn't think about, and they get excited about eating new foods.

I have a few tomato and jalapeno plants growing in large pots on my porch. They seem to do just fine, but with the tomatoes only put one seedling per pot so they don't get crowded. Those tomatoes and peppers make some great salsa, and the kids love to eat them because they helped "grow" them.

If you can find a very tall pot, potatoes are a lot of fun for them too...put the tater in te dirt about 1/4 wayup the pot, then cover wth a little dirt, when you see green showing, cover it with more dirt!! Keep doing that till te pot is full of dirt and the plant flowers, then have them dig up their taters!!!
